Ranging from the beautiful and amazing Kotori-Chan and Inui-san to the almighty lightsaber fighters, FAST. We at Eleven Tsuki had the honour to interview Inui-san and Kotori-san from Japan. A big thank you to Robin who was there to translate for us and also to Nicholas Lim who recorded and shared the interview clips with us.

Inui-san is the founder of the Cure Cosplay website and also the host of the Cure Cosplay Collection, a famous cosplay fashion runway that started in Japan. Kotori-san on the other hand is the MC (Master of Ceremony) for the Cure Cosplay Collection even back in Japan.

Kotori-san and Inui-san before the 2nd Day of CCC.

Q1: What really kick-started your cosplaying careers?

I: I was initially a doujinshi artist. So, it was because of doujinshi that I am cosplaying now. Furthermore, as a cosplayer,  I get to face the customers in cosplay and talk to them.

K: As for me, I was invited and being influenced (invited) by my friends.

Q2: What is your opinion regarding the events in Malaysia?

I: Basically, the cosplay event in Japan is more like a photography event. There are not many booths or stage activities. So, photography is the main thing. But here, there are all kinds of goods being sold at the booths. Even so, the cosplayers themselves as well as along with the photographers interact with one another and communicate with one another. But, this kind of thing is interesting.

K: As Inui-san has shared his point of view, I shall share a slightly different experience of mine.. *chuckles* I have been doing stage related jobs (MC?). Even though this is my first time attending this event, everyone cheered really loudly and basically have been really supportive. That is my general impression of the event. In Japan, I am not sure whether you knew, when someone appears at an event or when someone appears for the first time, the response (of the crowd) would be like *puts on a poker face*. Although it has been about three years since I began working at Ikebukuro, I did not receive much attention for about two years.

Q2(Jap):

Q3: Do you remember the first time when you were cosplaying for a shoot and how was it really like?

I: Initially, cosplay photography was not my main thing (major). But after cosplaying as Aizen Sousuke from Bleach then it has become the main thing.

K: For me, it was like a fun gathering. My friends invited me to cosplay characters from the Vocaloid series with them. I cosplayed as Megurin Luka at that time while my friend cosplayed as Hatsune Miku. It was really fun as it was like a party with us eating snacks and taking pictures.

Q4: Despite the religion here, do you see the potential for the cosplayers in Malaysia?

I: It does not matter. Basically, people like transformation and fantasy. I think the cosplayers in Malaysia too. For example, the character has red hair. According to the people I know, there are cosplayers who substitute it with a scarf (Hijab) of the same colour. Although, some may disagree on this but there are also others who view this as a cosplay.  In cosplay, the main thing is to enjoy yourself. So, I do not thing it would effect the future of the cosplay in Malaysia from growing.

K: Of course, even though there is a charm in covering the face and putting on a wig but revealing cosplays may not be accepted by everyone and that (the revealing cosplays) can be a sensitive issue. The main thing is still to have fun. At Singapore events, there are Malaysians who would go all the way there to attend the event. Malaysians love cosplay so cosplay would definitely have a bright future.

Q5: This is a question for Kotori-san. I can’t help but realize that both you and the character share the same name Does your cosplay name revolve around her or did you choose to cosplay as her because of the same name?

K: You mean, which comes first? So, what do you think? Which do you think came first?

Interviewer: Er…I’m not sure. Could it be that it is because she has the same as you and you cosplayed as her?

K: I shall reveal the answer. Well, even before the Love Live series was released, I have been going by the name ‘Kotori’. I have thought about it before. Even if Minami Kotori-chan appeared first,  I would still do it! Despite people telling me that I do not suit the character, I would still do it. Since, both also have the name ‘Kotori’, it would be interesting. I would do it!

I: In the cosplay world, there are a lot of similar coincidences happening.

Interviewer (Jap) : 。。

Q6 : There are many singing competitions around and there are a lot of people singing Japanese songs. As a Japanese, do you feel touched or do you feel otherwise?

I: At the karaoke box in Japan, Japanese would mostly sing Japanese songs and rarely sing English songs.

K: That is not it. *pouts* (Referring to singing Japanese songs. According to her, she would sometimes sing English songs.)

I: Even though there are many Japanese songs being sung on stage, that means that we can get along through the culture, it is a refreshing thing. Even though I felt surprised but I was also touched.

K: Let’s see. Other than the event held by Venus-san in Malaysia, the last time I witnessed a singing competition would be at an event in Singapore. Well, Inui-san knows it too. To the contestants who are able to sing even in Japanese and to enter the competition, for that reason, this is what I think:

To me as well, if I really like it, I would desperately memorize the English version lyrics of the Disney songs, even though it is a long way more to go. It is because they love Mandarin songs, to be able to sing the song as it is, they would like listen to it, or so I thought. It is because of love that they can be so passionate. Well, even though I am not a representative or anything like that, to people who are able to love the charm of that country’s culture as it is, I think that it is the same.

Q7 : Characteristic that you would look out for before you make your decision?

I: Ah, I see. Basically, there are two things. Firstly, in anime that have just been released, after looking through the information, I would look at the appearance and I would choose the character that has the looks (appearance) that I like.  That is one. The second one would be, besides talking about the looks of that character, I like to engross into the personality. So, then the cosplay would begin.

K: What I would do would be similar to Inui-san. Actually, even though I do not really know about the new things, after reading a manga or watching an anime series, when I find the character I think is great or cute I would cosplay after that. Like, the Minami Kotori incident just now, and then everyone would joke, like “ah, you did it because of the same name,” that kind of thing. I just did it with the will to joke around and laugh.

Q8 : What is the character that you want to cosplay the most?

I: Right now, maybe nothing from new series. From now on, there was a famous old series by Matsumoto Leiji, Captain Harlock. Even if I die, I would want to cosplay the main character. I really like that character.

K:  (* I could not really catch the front part of her answer so I noted down what I heard) I really want to cosplay a 189cm handsome character. I know that I do not have enough skills… but I will do my best. When I think about it, I really want to cosplay Disney characters, like Ariel and Belle.

Q8 (Jap):

Q9 : What was your most challenging cosplay?

I: That would be Katakura Kojuro of Sengoku Basara. The armor has different parts and each part contains different colours. When I put it on, it felt really warm. Making it [the armor] was difficult, and wearing it was also difficult.

K: As for me, it would be Puri Para *shows picture*. It is a character from a children’s game. Transcribing the dress from the fantasy world to the reality world is difficult. The dress is wide and grand.

Q10 : Do you have any advice on improving the event?

I: In general, if I have an event, I would do real time reporting. For example, by using a camera to film the on-going events happening around and broadcast it on Youtube. To the viewers of the event, their initial perspectives would change and they would think that ‘oh, why don’t we check it out since it is nearby?’. Furthermore, I think it is also good to keep tabs on those who viewed the recordings (or something the viewers/ followers of the event).

K: I have the same thoughts as Inui-san. Also, having performances would help. We had a rehearsal yesterday for CCC.  There were some participants who did not show up, some who were more than thirty minutes late but did not contact us, and there was even a participant whose wing fell off during the actual show despite being warned to be cautious. It cannot be helped. Well, maybe it is a first so it cannot be helped as they did not know, like “I did not know that cosplayers would move like that”, or “I did not know that person’s costume would be that fancy”. Even though there are mistakes which are unavoidable, it would effect the event. Perhaps with more time to prepare, it could help the event run smoother.

Q11: What are the places that the both of you would like to visit in Malaysia?

I: Last Friday, when I went to Central Market’s Batu Caves, the top was like a fantasy. One day, I really want to be able to go all the way up there and take pictures from the top.

K: Similar to what Inui-san said, I also went sight-seeing last Friday. During the time when I was on the monorail, I saw the blue mosque (Shah Alam Mosque). I wanted to visit it but it was not allowed at that time as there were a lot of people during prayers. So, if there is a chance, I would like to visit it one day.

Q11 (Jap) :

Q12:  Do you have any messages for your fans?

I: Firstly, I am really grateful for the chance to come here and I have met a lot of wonderful people. From now on, you would meet people so treasure these meetings. The purpose of creating the Cure Cosplay website is to connect people from all around the world. So far, I am very happy with the results. It will be a pleasure to be in everyone’s acquaintance from now on.

K: I do not think I have fans, right? Inui-san is different. Rather than fans, I have made many friends. I am really grateful for that. ‘Please come to Malaysia,’, ‘See you on Sunday!,’ or like ‘Long time no see,’ that kind of thing. Like yesterday, after knowing that I really like donuts, someone gave me a box of Big Apple donuts. For someone who knew this despite not knowing me, it makes me really happy. Of course, I want to convey my feelings, I want to convey the thankful feeling. If there is ever anything, that would be ‘Thank you’. That is all.
